Summer Along the Coast – then and now

A new photo display at the Conwy Culture Centre shines a spotlight on how summer leisure activities along the coast of Conwy county have changed since as far back as the 1870s.

During summer 2024, 18 members of Conwy Camera Club took part in a joint project with Conwy Archive Service, which provided a selection of historic photos of the coast from Llanfairfechan to Kinmel Bay. Club members returned to the same locations to record the equivalent scenes today.

The results are presented in an A4 display stand at Conwy library, inside the Culture Centre off Town Ditch Road. You can place the stand on a table if you’d like to sit while you view the photos and read the captions. The display will move later to other libraries in the county.

We will also display some of the images each month on our screen in the window of the GH Edwards shop in Conwy High Street (each month’s slideshow for the screen can also be viewed on YouTube). We’ve started with images of Britain’s Smallest House in 1928 and 2024, and Colwyn Bay prom before and after the Victoria Pier, in January’s sequence – see the next news post, below.
